Connecting to Romano servers by name from a non domain joined PC

If you are connect to one of the servers in our domain through Remote Desktop, you may run into an error message that looks like this

If you run into this error message, this means that you are attempting to connect to one of our servers by name instead of ip address and your computer is not connected to our domain. The way you can get around this error is by adding a DNS suffix to your computer name so that the domain will recognize your computer as an authorized device on the DNS server. To do this, you need to go into your PC properties by opening File Explorer by clicking on this icon,  .  Then you will right click on This PC and scroll down and click on Properties at the bottom of the list.

This should take you to a screen that has an option to Rename this PC. It will either be in the middle or off to the right. You want to select the one on the right. You can also find it in Advanced Settings under the Computer Name tab.

Once you click on Rename this PC you will see the option that says Change... Click on this to change the name of the PC.

Once you click on Change, you will be prompted to Rename the PC but you will also see below that there is a more button. You want to click that button.

When you click the More button, you will see at the top that it is asking you to fill in a primary DNS Suffix of this computer. You want this to be romano.local in order for the remote desktop to be able to connect to our servers using the name of the server.

After you enter in romano.local as the primary DNS suffix you will want to make sure the box underneath is checked so that it only uses this domain under your local account. After that you just hit OK until you get out of all of the subwindows and exit out of settings.

If you have any questions or need assistance with this, please reach out to the IT department for assistance.
